Who Are the Best Decision Makers You Know?

Who are best decision-makers you know? A very smart man asked me that question a long time ago. It has stimulated my thinking ever since. If you examine any environment, you’ll identify one or more people who just seem to be the best thinkers. They’re decisive. They’re insightful. People look to them for guidance and inspiration. Who are those people in your environment?

Once you’ve done this, ask yourself two questions. First, “What are they doing that I should be doing?” In other words, what positive attributes and habits of mind do they practice that enable them to think through problems in a confident and decisive manner? Second, “What are they NOT doing that I should not be doing?” Life is full of temptations and distractions. But if you observe these people, you’ll notice they display more self-discipline than those around them. This enables them to conserve energy, think more strategically and lead a more balanced life. They also surround themselves with others who possess these same attributes. In fact, if you want to hang out with them, you’ll have to display this same discipline. The upside of doing so, however, is amazing. By the way, encourage those you supervise to ask these same three questions. Those who do so will be the ones to watch going forward. They’re your next leaders.
